  • The New Hampshire Drug Monitoring Initiative reports that more than 3,600 people were admitted to addiction treatment programs in the state during 2019. The number of admissions increased significantly from 2018.

With so many people in need of addiction treatment in the state of New Hampshire and across New England, it helps to learn about the different recovery center options and resources available in the region.

How To Find & Choose A Drug Rehab Center In New Hampshire

In the state of New Hampshire, addiction treatment falls under the responsibilities of the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.

This department, along with the Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services, is responsible for providing oversight, as well as certifying specific treatment facilities.

Patients interested in enrolling in substance abuse treatment programs in New Hampshire can use a variety of different resources to find the appropriate care:

To select the best drug treatment program for your needs in New Hampshire, look for a recovery program that:

    • is certified by the state, which means it meets specific standards of quality
    • is staffed by licensed treatment professionals who hold a valid license from the New Hampshire Board of Licensing for Alcohol and Other Drug Use Professionals.
    • offers treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression or PTSD, that often complicates addiction
    • offers evidence-based treatment options backed by research studies
    • customizes treatment plans to meet the needs of each individual patient

As you compare different treatment programs, you may also need to consider other factors, such as your personal goals for treatment and the cost of each substance abuse program.

New Hampshire Substance Abuse Treatment Programs

New Hampshire recognizes several levels of care in addiction treatment, including:

    • intensive outpatient treatment
    • partial hospitalization
    • transitional living
    • low-intensity residential treatment
    • high-intensity residential treatment
    • integrated medication-assisted treatment
    • opioid treatment programs
    • ambulatory services
    • residential withdrawal management services
    • recovery support services

The level of care necessary will depend on an assessment of your specific needs as a patient, as well as the severity of your alcohol or drug abuse problem. Many patients will need different levels of care throughout their addiction treatment journey.

    Medical Drug & Alcohol Detox

New Hampshire offers residential withdrawal management programs, which may also be called medical detox programs, to provide support to patients while they go through withdrawal. The goal of this program is to help stabilize you before you enter another level of care.

The drug and alcohol services offered in a residential withdrawal management program may vary, but examples include:

    • medications to lessen withdrawal symptoms
    • supervision from nurses or doctors in case of a medical emergency
    • fluids and proper nutrition
    • emotional or psychological support

Residential withdrawal management programs are usually short-term, allowing you to progress to the next level of care as soon as you are physically and emotionally able.

    Inpatient Drug Rehab Programs

Inpatient or residential drug rehab programs in New Hampshire take several forms with different levels of intensity.

In high-intensity programs, you will experience high levels of structure and support, as well as more intensive treatment services. Low-intensity residential treatment programs, on the other hand, provide less structure and are designed to help you prepare for your return to society.

Many patients with alcohol or drug addiction will begin with a high-intensity program and transition to a low-intensity program after they have progressed to a certain point.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

If you enroll in an outpatient addiction treatment program, you will attend scheduled treatment sessions but will not be required to remain in the treatment facility. New Hampshire offers both basic outpatient treatment programs and intensive outpatient programs

In a basic outpatient treatment program, you will learn about substance use disorders and their consequences. You will also be encouraged to examine your own thinking and attitudes toward substance use so you can learn to make healthier decisions.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

New Hampshire’s medication-assisted treatment programs offer additional support during treatment in the form of prescription medication. The medications prescribed in these programs are intended to combat cravings and promote long-term recovery.

Medication is used in combination with other treatment services in most cases, such as individual or group therapy. New Hampshire encourages MAT providers to coordinate care with support groups and other providers of non-medical services for the most effective treatment possible.

    Aftercare Support

The purpose of aftercare support is to help you stay sober after you have finished your formal addiction treatment program. New Hampshire refers to aftercare support as “recovery support services.”

These services may be provided by peers who are also in addiction recovery, or they may be provided by non-peers. Examples of recovery support services include:

    • peer or non-peer recovery coaching
    • parenting classes
    • childcare
    • transportation
    • vocational services
    • other relapse prevention services

Using Insurance For Addiction Treatment In New Hampshire

Addiction treatment in New Hampshire may be funded by public insurance (Medicaid or Medicare), private insurance, and/or state resources. If you have private insurance, you can begin the process of enrolling in addiction treatment by:

    • speaking with your primary healthcare provider about a referral for addiction treatment
