If you or a loved one struggles with a substance use disorder, you can learn more about treatment options in Colorado.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In Colorado

The Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health oversees addiction treatment throughout the state. The Community Behavioral Health division of the department manages substance use and mental health treatment, recovery, and prevention services throughout the state.

You can use this valuable state resource to find in-depth information about addiction treatment options available throughout the state. To find treatment facilities in your area, you can also:

As you search for a high-quality addiction treatment program in Colorado, it’s typically best to consider facilities that offer:

    • evidence-based services that have documented clinical and scientific evidence to demonstrate their efficacy in addiction treatment
    • individualized treatment plans that are designed to address each person’s unique addiction treatment needs
    • licensed drug and alcohol counselors who have passed rigorous state testing and demonstrated competency in drug addiction treatment
    • a full continuum of care, from medical detoxification to aftercare support services
    • accreditation from a state or federal oversight program that denotes the facility’s adherence to a high standard of care

As you consider alcohol and drug treatment programs, it’s also important to think about your background with substance use, the forms of payment facilities accept, and the length and type of treatment programs offered.

Colorado Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs

The Community Behavioral Health division of the Colorado Department of Human Services details several addiction treatment and mental health resources available throughout the state.

When you seek treatment for a substance use disorder in the state of Colorado, you’ll have access to several levels of care, including:

    • detoxification
    • residential treatment
    • intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
    • standard outpatient treatment
    • opioid use disorder programs
    • transitional or aftercare services

The level of treatment you require and the design of your individualized treatment plan will depend on the results of initial screening and personal needs assessment.

    Medical Drug & Alcohol Detoxification

Medically supervised detoxification programs are designed to help you withdraw from alcohol or drugs safely. For many patients, this type of program is the first step in the rehab process.

Medical detox programs provide short-term, 24-hour medical supervision and behavioral support to help you prepare for your next phase of a recovery program.

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Inpatient treatment programs in Colorado may be short- or long-term in duration, depending on individual needs. When you undergo residential treatment, you’ll live at the rehab facility for the duration of your drug or alcohol rehab program.

In this type of program, you’ll have access to a variety of resources and support services, which may include:

    • individual counseling and group therapy
    • dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring disorders
    • holistic/wellness approaches, such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, and others

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

When you attend outpatient addiction treatment in Colorado, you’ll be required to travel to and from the rehab facility for each therapy session. Typically outpatient programs are offered as a step-down level of care after the completion of a more intensive residential program.

Most facilities offer a variety of outpatient programs, including:

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

In Colorado, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs are designed to help individuals who struggle with addiction to opioids or alcohol.

MAT programs administer FDA-approved medications to help alleviate withdrawal side effects and rebalance both the mind and body during treatment. As part of a MAT program, you may also receive behavioral therapy and counseling.

    Aftercare Support

For most people, addiction recovery doesn’t end when they leave the treatment facility — it’s a lifelong journey. For that reason, the best rehab facilities offer aftercare support services designed to prevent relapse and encourage long-term sobriety.

    Aftercare services may include:

    • case management
    • individual and group counseling
    • self-help support groups
    • vocation and educational services
    • transitional or sober-living housing

Using Insurance For Addiction Treatment In Colorado

Many addiction treatment facilities in Colorado accept private and public insurance, and sometimes military insurance like Tricare, to help cover the cost of rehab.

Your coverage will depend on the type of program you select, the specifics of your policy, and whether your chosen facility is in your insurer’s network.

To learn more about your insurance coverage and whether it’ll help pay for addiction rehab, you can contact your insurance provider or the addiction treatment center.

    If You Don’t Have Insurance

If you don’t have insurance, you may still be able to attend an addiction treatment program in Colorado. For more information about state-funded addiction treatment resources in Colorado, visit Colorado 2-1-1.
