  • In South Carolina, drug-related deaths more than doubled from 2008-2017. Addiction treatment facility admissions have also risen substantially in that timeframe.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, there are currently 113 addiction and mental health rehab centers throughout the state

Many of those treatment facilities are located in South Carolina’s more metropolitan areas, including Columbia, Charleston, and Greenville.

If you or someone you love suffers from a substance use disorder, you can learn more about your treatment options.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services oversees addiction and mental health treatment. This agency provides assessments and resources that can help you find the right addiction treatment center for your individual needs.

Other options for finding addiction treatment in South Carolina include:

    • speaking with your primary care provider to get a treatment referral
    • calling South Carolina 2-1-1 to inquire about addiction and substance abuse services
    • using SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Treatment Locator
    • contacting treatment providers directly

As you evaluate your treatment facility options, look for programs that have:

    • accreditation from national or state agencies that indicates adherence to a high standard of care
    • evidence-based services that have documented proof of their efficacy in addiction treatment
    • treatment for co-occurring disorders that addresses a dual diagnosis of substance addiction and mental health issues
    • individualized treatment plans that are based on your unique needs
    • a full continuum of care, from detox and inpatient treatment to outpatient treatment and aftercare support services

South Carolina Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs

The South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services works hard to ensure individuals have access to a variety of drug and alcohol rehab programs.

In its network of nationally accredited and state-licensed treatment facilities, patients have access to several levels of care for addiction treatment, including:

    • substance use/mental health assessments
    • detox programs
    • inpatient treatment
    • outpatient treatment
    • medication-assisted treatment
    • transitional housing

When you seek treatment for a substance use disorder, the results of your initial assessment will help determine the levels of care that are best for you or a loved one.

    Medical Detox Programs

If you need to detox from drugs or alcohol, it’s critical that you work with a properly trained and qualified team to get through the withdrawal process safely.

In a medically supervised detoxification program, you’ll receive 24-hour care and behavioral support to help you prepare for the next phase of your treatment.

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Residential drug rehab offers the most intensive level of care for addiction treatment. In inpatient rehab, you must live at the facility for the duration of your recovery program.

As part of a residential program, you’ll receive 24-hour care, as well as a variety of therapeutic and clinical approaches to help you overcome addiction.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient treatment varies in type and intensity based on your unique needs. More involved forms of outpatient care include partial hospitalization treatment and intensive outpatient treatment

Both of these forms of care may be similar to inpatient treatment in services and effectiveness.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications, such as buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone, with behavioral therapy to address opioid or alcohol addiction.

The combination of therapy and medication helps to rebalance your brain and body while reducing substance cravings and helping you sustain recovery.

    Aftercare Support

After the completion of a dedicated rehab program, you may need to take advantage of continuing care services to support your healing journey.

Because addiction recovery is a lifelong process, the best rehab facilities offer aftercare support services, which may include:

Using Insurance For Addiction Treatment In South Carolina

In South Carolina, you can use your private insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare to help cover the cost of your addiction treatment program.

Accepted providers and coverage limits vary by facility and insurance policy, so it’s important to verify your coverage before seeking treatment.

    If You Don’t Have Insurance

If you don’t have insurance, you can still receive treatment at a South Carolina rehab facility. You can pay for services out of pocket, apply for a treatment scholarship, or receive state-funded services if you demonstrate serious financial need.
