  • Many Utah residents suffer from substance use disorders. Alcohol and drug use rates in Utah are generally lower than national averages, but many communities struggle with growing issues relating to prescription and non-prescription opioid abuse.

Although opioid-related overdose deaths have decreased in Utah in recent years, the state still recorded 192 deaths from prescription opioids in 2019.

Fortunately, Utah residents have access to a range of drug and alcohol rehab options throughout the state. If you or a loved one struggles with alcohol or drug addiction in Utah, you can learn more about your substance abuse treatment options.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In Utah

The Utah Department of Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Division oversees addiction treatment throughout the state.

If you’re a Utah resident looking for an alcohol or drug rehab center, you can find a treatment provider by:

    • contacting treatment facilities directly
    • reaching out to your primary care provider to get a treatment center referral
    • using SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Treatment Locator
    • calling Utah’s crisis helpline
    • calling SAMHSA’s National HelpLine

As you research your treatment options, be sure to consider the following factors to find the best treatment facility for your needs:

    • individualized treatment plans: your addiction treatment plan must be personalized to address your unique needs and treatment goals to help you sustain long-term recovery
    • family involvement: if your family comprises the majority of your support system, it’s best to find a treatment facility that allows family involvement throughout the treatment process
    • evidence-based services: proven treatments, like cognitive behavioral therapy, have documented research demonstrating their efficacy in addiction treatment
    • treatment for co-occurring disorders: dual-diagnosis treatment is designed to address both addiction and other mental health issues simultaneously
    • accreditation: accreditation from the Joint Commission or another oversight agency signifies that a recovery program adheres to the highest quality standards of care

Utah Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs

Utah residents have access to a variety of alcohol and drug treatment programs that offer multiple levels of care for addiction treatment.

Depending on your unique needs, your current circumstances, and the recommendation of your treatment provider, you may benefit from:

    • medical detox
    • residential treatment
    • outpatient treatment programs
    • medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
    • treatment for co-occurring disorders
    • aftercare support services

    Medical Drug & Alcohol Detoxification

Most individuals who suffer from substance use disorder begin their treatment with a short-term, medical detoxification program. Detox is designed to guide you through the withdrawal process safely, as withdrawing from drugs or alcohol can produce dangerous side effects.

Your detox program likely includes 24-hour medical monitoring to keep you safe and comfortable. You’ll also receive behavioral support and may receive medications to help alleviate withdrawal side effects.

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Residential treatment centers provide an environment where you can focus solely on your recovery rather than the rigors of everyday life. While you undergo inpatient rehab, you’ll be required to live at the facility for the duration of your program.

Throughout your treatment, you’ll have 24-hour access to a range of evidence-based and therapeutic treatment services to support your recovery. These may include group therapy, holistic care, experiential therapy, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and more.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient addiction treatment may be a viable option for individuals who cannot attend inpatient rehab. Partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs offer many of the same services as residential treatment.

When you attend outpatient rehab, you’ll be able to live at home but you must travel to the recovery center several days per week for treatment sessions.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a specialized care program designed to help individuals who suffer from opiate or alcohol addiction.

MAT programs combine behavioral therapies and FDA-approved medications to help alleviate the side effects of addiction and reduce substance cravings. Depending on your needs, you may receive medication-assisted treatment as part of inpatient or outpatient rehab.

    Aftercare Support

After you complete a dedicated rehab program, aftercare support services can help you stay strong in your addiction recovery. Having a continuing care plan in place is essential for your long-term success.

Depending on your needs, your treatment provider may recommend that you participate in one or more of the following aftercare services:

Using Insurance For Addiction Treatment In Utah

Most rehab facilities in Utah accept private health insurance to help cover the cost of treatment.

Many facilities also accept Medicaid, as the Utah Department of Health has authorization from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to use federal Medicaid funds to cover residential treatment.

The specifics of your health insurance policy will determine the amount of coverage you have for addiction treatment. When you’re ready to seek treatment, you can find out more about your insurance coverage by:

    • calling the number on the back of your health insurance care for more information about your benefits
    • speaking with your HR benefits administrator if you have employer-sponsored health coverage
    • calling treatment providers directly to inquire about insurance coverage and whether their facility is in your network

    If You Don’t Have Insurance

If you’re a Utah resident who doesn’t have health insurance, you can still attend an addiction treatment program in the state. Many facilities offer sliding-scale services based on your ability to pay and some facilities offer no-cost services for low-income individuals.

You can also attend rehab by paying out of pocket for treatment services, applying for financing through treatment facilities that offer it, or by applying for an addiction treatment scholarship.
