  • Thousands of Michigan residents suffer from alcohol or drug addiction. In 2018, there were more drug-related overdose deaths in the state than deaths related to vehicle crashes. The state recorded 2,599 drug overdose deaths that year, with over 2,000 deaths attributed to opioids.

If you or a loved one struggles with addiction, Michigan offers a variety of drug and alcohol rehab facilities to help you achieve long-term recovery. Admitting the need for professional care can be difficult, but getting the treatment you need is the best way to reclaim your health.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In Michigan

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) oversees addiction treatment services throughout the state.

MDHHS’s Office of Recovery Oriented System of Care is dedicated to reducing overdose deaths and providing information and resources for individuals who need substance abuse treatment.

To find a substance abuse treatment program in Michigan, you can start by:

As you consider your treatment options, it can be difficult to determine which rehab facility will best meet your needs. During your facility evaluation process, you may want to consider a treatment center that offers:

    • individualized treatment plans: Individualized treatment plans provide the best chance at a successful, long-term recovery as they cater to your unique needs and goals.
    • licensed counselors: The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals issues licensing to counselors with extensive education, experience, and skill.
    • complete continuum of care: Facilities that offer a full continuum of care allow you to work with the same treatment providers throughout different levels of care.
    • evidence-based treatments: Evidence-based treatment, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, have documented evidence supporting their efficacy in addiction treatment.
    • treatment for co-occurring disorders: Individuals who suffer from a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health disorder can benefit from dual-diagnosis care.

As you work to find the right rehab facility for your needs, it’s also important to consider program affordability, health insurance coverage, and your personal treatment goals.

Michigan Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs

Recovery programs throughout Michigan offer multiple levels of care for addiction treatment. Widely available programs throughout the state include:

    • medical detoxification
    • inpatient treatment
    • outpatient services
    • medication-assisted treatment
    • aftercare programs

When you enter rehab, your treatment provider will help you through an assessment to determine your individual needs. You’ll then receive a treatment plan that may include multiple levels of care depending on your situation.

    Medical Detox In Michigan

The process of withdrawing from drugs and alcohol can cause mild to severe physical and psychological side effects. If you need to withdraw from drugs or alcohol safely, you’ll likely begin your rehab journey with a medically supervised detoxification program

In this phase of treatment, you’ll receive 24/7 medical and behavioral support to help you overcome the short-term side effects of withdrawal.

    Inpatient Drug Rehab In Michigan

Inpatient addiction treatment is the most intensive form of rehab. When you enter a residential rehab program, you receive 24-hour care and behavioral support for drug or alcohol addiction.

Many residential programs also provide dual-diagnosis care for co-occurring mental health conditions and medication-assisted treatment to help lessen psychological cravings for drugs or alcohol. One-on-one counseling and group therapy are also frequently included.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient rehab services may be an effective alternative to inpatient treatment if you have a demanding career or other pressing life obligations. Many individuals also move on to outpatient treatment as a step-down level of care after they complete a residential rehab program.

Most treatment facilities offer outpatient services at various levels of care, which typically include partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

    Opioid & Alcohol Treatment Programs

Many individuals who suffer from opioid or alcohol addiction struggle with lasting physical and psychological issues that can be difficult to overcome with therapy alone.

Your treatment provider will work with you to determine whether medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can help you manage the lasting effects of drug or alcohol abuse. MAT programs use a combination of approved medications and therapy to improve treatment outcomes.

    Aftercare Support

Successful recovery from alcohol and drug abuse is a lifelong journey. As such, the best recovery centers offer aftercare support services designed to help you maintain long-term sobriety.
