How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In Tennessee

In Tennessee, the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Services (TDMHSAS) oversees addiction treatment throughout the state.

TDMHSAS tracks substance abuse data, maintains a network of grant-funded rehab facilities, provides recovery support services, and issues licensing for substance abuse treatment professionals.

This agency can also help you find an addiction treatment facility in your area. You can learn more by visiting TDMHSAS’s Treatment & Recovery page.

To locate the right Tennessee treatment center for your needs, you can also:

As you evaluate substance abuse treatment programs to find one that meets your unique needs, consider a program that has:

    • licensed drug and alcohol counselors who have completed state licensing through TDMHSAS
    • individualized treatment plans that are designed to accommodate each patients unique circumstances, needs, and goals of treatment
    • treatment for co-occurring disorders for individuals who have a dual diagnosis of addiction and mental health issues
    • a full continuum of care, from medical detox and inpatient treatment to outpatient services and aftercare programs
    • evidence based services that have proven research demonstrating their efficacy in addiction treatment

As part of your facility evaluation process, other things to consider include treatment program duration, your personal treatment goals, cost of care, whether facilities accept insurance, and your history with substance use.

Tennessee Alcohol & Drug Treatment Programs

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Treatment Services details a wide range of substance abuse treatment services available throughout the state. These include:

    • substance abuse screenings
    • crisis detoxification
    • medically managed inpatient detox
    • inpatient treatment
    • outpatient services
    • medication-assisted treatment
    • co-occurring disorder treatment
    • aftercare support services

When you enter an alcohol or drug rehab program, the type of treatment you’ll receive will likely be based on an individual needs assessment.

Based on the results of your screening, you’ll then have access to various levels of care designed to meet your personal substance use and behavioral health needs.

    Medical Drug & Alcohol Detox

Before you embark on your substance abuse treatment journey, you’ll need to allow your body and mind to detox from alcohol or drugs. To provide a safe and supervised space for withdrawal, many Tennessee treatment facilities offer medical detox programs.

In a medical detox program, you’ll typically have access to:

    • 24-hour medically directed evaluation, monitoring, observation, and withdrawal management
    • medications to manage symptoms, if required
    • behavioral support and comfort measures
    • IV nutritional and fluid support

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Residential or inpatient programs throughout Tennessee provide short- or long-term treatment, depending on your individual needs. In this type of program, you’ll live in a residential treatment facility for the duration of your care.

Throughout your treatment program, you’ll have access to a variety of services, which may include:

    • one-on-one counseling
    • group therapy
    • holistic care approaches, such as meditation, equine therapy, or yoga
    • dual diagnosis care for co-occurring disorders
    • medication-assisted treatment
    • evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient treatment requires you to travel to and from the rehab facility to each session. In many cases, outpatient services are a viable alternative to residential treatment for those who have demanding careers or pressing life obligations they must attend to.

This type of care is frequently used as a step-down form of treatment after the completion of an inpatient rehab program. Outpatient treatment programs in Tennessee are offered at several levels, including:

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in Tennessee combines medication administration and behavioral therapy for those who struggle with opioid or alcohol addiction.

Medications are designed to relieve physiological cravings for substances, block the euphoric effects of substances, and normalize brain chemistry and bodily functions.

    Aftercare Support

Addiction recovery is a lifelong journey that almost always requires ongoing support and care even after the completion of a dedicated rehab program. To provide that support, the best addiction treatment facilities in Tennessee offer aftercare programs.

These programs offer access to a variety of resources, which may include:

    • sober-living or recovery housing
    • case management
    • relapse prevention skills building
    • employment skills coaching
    • recovery skills building and activities
    • group or self-help therapy sessions

Using Health Insurance For Addiction Treatment In Tennessee

Many addiction treatment centers throughout Tennessee accept various private insurance policies to help cover the cost of care. Medicaid/TennCare and Medicare can also help cover the cost of treatment, but keep in mind that insurance benefits vary according to policy and provider.

To find out whether a treatment facility accepts your insurance to help cover the cost of treatment in Tennessee, you can:

    • call the number on the back of your health insurance card
    • contact the treatment provider directly to ask about insurance coverage
    • discuss your benefits with your HR department, if you have group health insurance from your employer

    If You Don’t Have Insurance

If you don’t have insurance, Tennessee maintains an extensive network of grant-funded treatment facilities for those who meet specific financial requirements. You can browse state-funded treatment providers at Tennessee’s Substance Abuse Treatment Provider Directory.
