  • There are alcohol and drug treatment options in Oregon for people struggling with addiction. During the first six months of 2020, Oregon recorded 339 drug overdose deaths, which was a sharp increase from the previous year.

Oregon is home to a wide range of treatment services. These can include residential, outpatient, and detox programs.

The Oregon Health Authority oversees addiction treatment in the state as well as resources for people in recovery, such as helplines and peer support efforts.

How To Find & Choose Substance Abuse Treatment In Oregon

The state of Oregon has appointed the Oregon Health Authority to oversee all addiction treatment within the state.

This governmental body has a wide-range of responsibilities, including implementing new policy as well as providing resources for individuals searching for drug and alcohol rehab centers.

These are the fastest ways to find addiction treatment and mental health services in the state of Oregon:

    • directly contact a treatment center
    • call the Oregon Alcohol and Drug Helpline
    • text the Oregon helpline by texting “RecoveryNow” to 839863
    • try using SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Treatment Locator
    • get a referral from your primary care physician

Finding addiction treatment comes down to knowing what sets apart a quality treatment facility in your state.

In Oregon, these are the factors you should keep in mind when looking for treatment:

    • accreditation: find treatment centers that are accredited by both the state of Oregon as well as other oversight organizations
    • continuum of care: rehab involves a wide-range of treatment services that support you throughout your recovery
    • evidence-based treatment: evidence-based treatment includes services that are proven to be effective for substance use disorder
    • licensing: Oregon’s Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO) licenses addiction treatment specialists in the state
    • individualized treatment plans: treatment should be customized to match you or your loved one’s needs

Oregon Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs

Addiction treatment is available at different levels and forms a continuum of care. This means that you can find support for your substance use disorder no matter the stage of your recovery.

Addiction treatment in Oregon often includes peer support groups and family involvement. The state also offers funding for people who need treatment, but are either uninsured or don’t have adequate coverage to help with the cost of addiction treatment.

Available treatment programs range from detox to aftercare services.

    Medical Drug & Alcohol Detoxification

Detox is one of the most vital parts of recovery. This level of treatment gives you medical support while you go through withdrawal.

It begins with an assessment of your withdrawal symptoms and then proceeds to support you while your body goes through this healing process.

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Residential treatment allows you to have 24-hour access to medical and therapeutic staff who can help you during the challenging times in your recovery.

Inpatient programs typically incorporate peer support elements into their recovery plans. Residential programs may also provide psychiatric care for co-occurring disorders, or when someone suffers from both addiction and a mental health disorder.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

In a partial hospitalization program, you can expect to find almost all of the same treatments as in a residential program. However, these programs require you to travel to the treatment center in order to make your appointments.

Another outpatient option is an intensive outpatient program (IOP) where you receive at least nine hours of treatment services each week, which may include group therapy, wellness programs, counseling, and more.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Also referred to as MAT, this type of treatment uses medications to help people through opioid or alcohol addiction. MAT can include well known medications like methadone

Medications do not replace one substance for another. Rather, they treat core psychological and physical symptoms of some of the most severe types of addiction. Medications are likely combined with behavioral therapy, peer support, and other recovery services.

    Aftercare Support

Addiction is a chronic medical condition. This means that a relapse can occur even after the primary treatments are completed. Long-term aftercare programs help to support you for years even after you’ve left your recovery program.

Using Health Insurance For Addiction Treatment In Oregon

It’s easy to use your insurance to pay for addiction treatment in Oregon. Depending on the type of insurance you have, you might be able to have it cover all, or some, of your addiction treatment costs.

You can follow these steps to see how much your insurance can help:

    • call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask your representative about the types of treatment they cover
    • contact a treatment provider directly and ask them if they can validate your insurance
    • look at your coverage plan and see if addiction treatment is listed as an option
    • understand the core aspects of coverage like in-network providers, co-pays, and deductibles as well as how these factors could impact your out of pocket costs

    If You Don’t Have Insurance

There are state-funded treatment options available to Oregon residents. These are being given additional funding thanks to new legislation, but are typically in high demand.

The state also offers the Oregon Health Plan for individuals and families with low-income status to help them get access to medical care including addiction treatment.

    Oregon Substance Abuse Facts

Oregon officials note that, based on preliminary data, there will likely be more recorded opioid-related overdose in 2021 than in both 2020 and 2019.

Other facts collected from the Oregon Health Authority include:

    • Preliminary data suggests there were 473 opioid–related deaths from January to August 2021.
    • In all of 2020, a total of 472 opioid-related deaths occured.
    • In all of 2019, a total of 280 opioid-related deaths occured.
    • There were more hospitalizations and ED visits related to opioid overdose in 2021 compared to both 2020 and 2019.

Although opioid overdose deaths involving fentanyl continue to rise in Oregon, other non-opioid drugs like methamphetamine are also on rise. In fact, almost half of all opioid-related deaths involve more than one substance, including alcohol or other drugs.
