There are addiction treatment centers all over New England, as well as many different options when it comes to your treatment program, including:

    • medical detox
    • outpatient treatment
    • inpatient treatment
    • Medication-assisted treatment
    • group therapy

Once you contact a treatment facility, you or your family member will receive a substance abuse assessment and a treatment plan will be created based on individual needs.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In New England

In each of the six states of New England, there is a government agency that oversees  treatment for substance use disorder:

Each of these agencies has substance abuse treatment resources you can find on their websites, but there are other ways of finding rehab programs as well, including:

When choosing a rehab program it’ important to look for:

    • accreditation from a state or national organization ensuring that the program follows all laws, they treat their patients compassionately, and that they are using well researched and acknowledged treatments
    • individualized treatment plans, providing you with specialized care because each person and situation are different and must be treated as such
    • evidence-based services will show that the recovery center follows scientifically researched methods of treatment
    • licensed drug and alcohol counselors (LADC), who are licensed through the state they practice in
    • dual diagnosis treatment for people who are suffering, not just from addiction, but also from an underlying mental health issue that must be treated at the same time

It’s a good idea to also consider the length of the rehab program, payment options, drug addiction/treatment history, and treatment goals when looking for a treatment facility.

    Addiction Treatment In New England

New England Alcohol & Drug Treatment Programs

Each state in New England has its own government agency dedicated to the prevention and treatment of people suffering from addiction and their loved ones.

They each have many resources on their websites and have helped make sure drug and alcohol treatment services are easily accessible.

Each drug and alcohol rehab center will provide an assessment, which is likely to examine:

    • your substance abuse history
    • your history with addiction recovery and rehabilitation
    • your concerns regarding co-occurring mental health disorders
    • your desire to put in the work to get healthy

New England recovery programs will assess your mental health needs and addiction goals to help decide which level of care you need, or if you’re interested in specialized programmings like gender-specific treatment or family therapy.

    Medical Drug And Alcohol Detox

Alcohol or drug addiction can result in dangerous withdrawal symptoms if use ceases. A medical detox program may be required to keep you safe, which may include:

    • nurses monitoring your symptoms 24/7
    • medical advice or addressing other health conditions and serious complications
    • preparing you to move on to the next phase of treatment by stabliizing your mental and physical health

In most New England states, you must be 18 years of age or older to be eligible for medical detox. You must also be assessed as at risk for acute withdrawal from drugs or alcohol.

    Residential/Inpatient Treatment

There are different forms of inpatient drug rehab in New England. You may find that you need a short-term or long-term program. There are sober-living homes, specialized gender-specific programming, therapeutic communities, and youth residential programs.

The benefits of inpatient treatment include:

    • living away from triggers and influences that can lead to drug use
    • building relationships with people who suffer from the same disease and can relate to your hardships
    • constantly being surrounded by supportive staff and residents while in a structured and safe environment

Each plan will be tailored to individual needs, and your rehab plan is likely to include a wide-range of treatment services from cognitive behavioral therapy to peer-led support groups.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Sometimes it’s not possible to take an extended break from your life, which is where outpatient treatment (an ambulatory service) might work best for you. This will be conducted by attending scheduled appointments for treatment and counseling.

There are three different types of outpatient treatment:

It’s helpful to have outside support for outpatient treatment from family members, friends, and other loved ones.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is used to help people suffering from specific substance use disorders; MAT provides medically monitored treatment for opioid or alcohol addictions.

    These treatments may include:

    • approved medications such as buprenorphine or methadone
    • alcohol and drug education
    • group therapy or individual counseling

    Aftercare Support

Ongoing support is needed to deal with the chronic, lifelong disease of addiction. Treatment centers will likely include long-term treatment options such as:

    • recovery or sober-living housing
    • self-help support groups
    • case management
    • therapy and counseling

The treatment center will likely connect you with ongoing support systems and community resources to help promote long-term recovery.

Using Health Insurance For Addiction Treatment In New England

In each New England state there are state-wide accepted health insurance options to help you pay for your treatment. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance are available in all states.

To learn more about your health insurance coverage, you can:

    • contact a treatment provider directly
    • call the number on your insurance card
    • research and learn about in-network providers, copays, prior-auths, and deductibles
    • contact your human resources department if your employer provides your insurance

If You Don’t Have Health Insurance

There are many treatment centers in the New England area that offer state-funded treatment. Look for the Department of Health logo for your state or find out if it is paid for by the Department of Health.

State-funded drug rehab centers will likely offer treatment programs for you at little to no cost without insurance coverage.
