    The Joint Commission (TJC)

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission (TJC) is a non-profit organization that accredits more than 22,000 health care programs across the U.S. As the nation’s oldest and largest health care accreditor, it aims to provide all citizens with safe, effective care.

    Surveys & Standards Of Care

To receive accreditation from TJC, a health care program must undergo an on-site survey by a TJC survey team.

Each survey team consists of doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, and other health care professionals. The surveyors evaluate each program by observing care, interacting with patients and staff, and analyzing the medical records of randomly selected patients.

During the survey, the program must demonstrate that it meets TJC’s standards of care. These frequently updated standards involve numerous aspects of treatment, including:

    • patient rights and education
    • medication management
    • medical error prevention
    • staff training and qualification
    • emergency preparation

If accredited, the program must undergo an additional survey at least once every three years. These unannounced surveys help ensure that the program is committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care.

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)

Founded in 1966, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) is a non-profit organization that recognizes health care programs with a demonstrated commitment to holistic, person-centered treatment.

It accredits more than 65,000 U.S. health care programs, including the majority of the nation’s opioid treatment programs (OTPs).

    Surveys & Standards Of Care

CARF survey teams evaluate each program by inspecting the environment, reviewing documentation, and interviewing patients and other stakeholders. Every program is evaluated by a unique survey team with expertise in the services it offers.

    During the evaluation, surveyors ensure:

    • that the program treats all patients with respect, dignity, and inclusion
    • that all patients have access to necessary, individualized, and highly effective services
    • that patients are empowered to make informed choices about their own care

If a program meets all of CARF’s standards, it receives three-year accreditation and undergoes an additional evaluation every three years. If a program meets most of CARF’s standards, it receives one-year accreditation and undergoes an additional evaluation every year.

All accredited programs must submit an annual report that details their commitment to continuously improve care.

Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS)

The Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) is a state government organization that licenses substance use disorder treatment programs in Massachusetts. It also oversees all prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery services for Massachusetts residents affected by substance misuse.

    Evidence-Based & Trauma-Informed Care

To become licensed by BSAS, a treatment program must offer personalized, holistic, evidence-based care. It must also meet standards of care regarding certain types of treatment, including:

    • medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
    • treatment for co-occurring disorders (also called dual diagnosis treatment)
    • treatment for special populations, including people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, older adults, veterans, and pregnant and postpartum women
    • treatment for people at risk of infectious diseases
    • stimulant use disorder treatment

In addition, BSAS only licenses programs that provide trauma-informed care. This type of care acknowledges the role that trauma often plays in substance use disorder.

It emphasizes physical, psychological, and emotional safety for both patients and staff, with special attention on potentially retraumatizing services such as drug screenings, physical examinations, and safety checks.

Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH)

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is a state government department that includes BSAS. It works to ensure that all Massachusetts residents have access to quality health care services, including addiction treatment and mental health services.

    Licenses & Standards

One of the department’s main responsibilities is to license treatment facilities and providers. It has issued more than 414,400 licenses, registrations, and permits for health care personnel across the state.

All behavioral health care facilities in Massachusetts must be licensed by the DPH.

To get and keep a license, a facility must display a commitment to individualized, evidence-based care for all patients regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, or economic status.

The facility must also meet the standards of care set by BSAS.

Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services (OMHAS)

Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services (OMHAS) is a state government department that oversees prevention, treatment, and recovery services for Ohioans affected by addiction and other mental health concerns.

It licenses residential facilities, private psychiatric hospitals, and community behavioral agencies throughout the state.

    Licenses & Surveys

Before issuing a license, OHMAS performs an on-site survey to ensure the facility provides safe, effective care.

In addition, to become licensed, all inpatient psychiatric programs must be accredited by either The Joint Commission (TJC) or another health care accreditor called Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

To maintain licensure, facilities must submit a license renewal application and a written report of any significant changes in policies or procedures each year. They must also undergo an additional on-site survey every three years.

By meeting the criteria of the above accrediting organizations, our rehab facilities provide a high standard of care that gives patients and their loved ones the best chance at lasting recovery.
