  • Substance abuse is a serious problem affecting thousands of people in the state of Maryland. In fact, during 2015 alone, more than 100,000 separate substance abuse treatment admissions were recorded in this state.

In addition, there are many people in this state who are struggling with substance use disorders but have not sought treatment. However, from Frederick to Baltimore, Annapolis, and Waldorf, there are numerous treatment options available in Maryland.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In Maryland

In the state of Maryland, substance abuse treatment services are under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Department of Health’s Behavioral Health Administration.

Within this administration, the Office of Treatment Services is responsible for connecting residents of Maryland with the drug or alcohol rehab they need.

If you are in search of addiction treatment services in Maryland, you can find a program by:

    • Talking to your doctor: If you’re dealing with a substance use disorder, your doctor can help you find an appropriate treatment program.
    • Calling the Maryland Helpline: You can get information and assistance related to substance use disorder treatment by dialing 211 or by texting your zip code to 898-211.
    • Searching for a program online: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a database you can use to locate addiction treatment in your area

When you compare recovery centers, there are several different factors you should consider, including:

    • Accreditation: The Maryland Department of Health offers accreditation to qualifying healthcare providers. Choosing an accredited provider ensures that you will receive services that meet standards established by the state.
    • Licensure: It’s always a good idea to verify that the addiction treatment center you choose employs licensed drug addiction counselors and healthcare professionals.
    • Treatment customization: The best treatment programs will tailor their services to meet the needs of every patient.
    • Family involvement: If you have family members who want to participate in the treatment process, look for a rehab facility that involves family and loved ones.
    • Continuum of care: A wide-range of treatment services may be beneficial to patients struggling with addiction. Look for a facility that offers multiple programs so you can find the services that meet your needs best.

Depending on your situation, you may also consider the cost, location and length of different drug and alcohol treatment programs. If you suffer from a co-occurring disorder, look for programs that offer care for dual diagnosis and underlying mental health issues.

Maryland Drug & Alcohol Treatment Programs

When you seek treatment for a substance use disorder in the state of Maryland, you will have access to a level of care that works for you.

Some of the treatment options available in this state include:

    • detoxification
    • Intensive outpatient programs
    • outpatient treatment
    • residential treatment
    • partial hospitalization programs
    • opioid maintenance therapy

Many patients will participate in more than one treatment approach as they pursue a full recovery from addiction. For example, many people begin with detoxification and progress through different levels of care until they are ready to return to society.

    Medical Drug & Alcohol Detoxification

For many patients, the first step in the treatment process is detoxification. The purpose of a medical drug and alcohol detoxification program is to help you deal with withdrawal symptoms as you eliminate drugs and alcohol from your system.

These programs usually include medical supervision and support, medication, and psychological support. Detox programs are often inpatient in structure and last for only a few days before patients are released to the next phase of treatment.

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Inpatient/residential treatment programs offer patients a high level of structure and stability while they work toward recovery. These programs not only provide a variety of services, such as holistic approaches and group therapy, but they also include housing and meals.

While in an inpatient treatment program, patients are able to focus their full attention on recovery. Inpatient rehab programs also provide patients with continuous support, which reduces the chances of relapse.

    Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient addiction treatment is less structured than inpatient treatment and provides patients with a greater amount of freedom. These programs require you to attend treatment sessions several times each week.

Outpatient treatment may also be recommended as a form of step-down following a stay at an inpatient rehabilitation center. In fact, many people with substance use disorders continue with outpatient care for months or even years.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment programs are designed to help patients with a chemical dependency to alcohol or opioids. If you enroll in this type of treatment, you will take a medication that reduces your drug cravings, thus making it easier for you to remain sober.

In most cases, you will also participate in group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or some other treatment intended to improve your chances of making a full recovery.

    Aftercare Support

After you have completed your recovery program, aftercare support is highly recommended. Aftercare keeps you connected to the addiction recovery community, giving you access to supportive resources at all times.

Aftercare services may include group meetings, peer recovery support groups, and sober living, as well as more practical services like parenting classes.

Using Health Insurance For Addiction Treatment In Maryland

Many Maryland substance abuse treatment facilities will accept insurance benefits. The exact amount your provider will pay will depend on the specifics of your policy, the program you choose, and whether or not your treatment facility is in-network.

You can learn about your insurance coverage by contacting your provider directly or reading your policy documents.

To ensure that you don’t have any surprises when your treatment bill arrives, be sure to verify your expenses with both your insurance provider and your treatment facility.

    If You Don’t Have Insurance

Even if you don’t have insurance coverage, you may still qualify to receive addiction treatment in Maryland. State-funded treatment programs are available to certain patients. Call the Maryland Helpline at 211 to learn more about these options.
