  • Many Pennsylvanians suffer from substance use disorder. Recently, studies have shown that Pennsylvania has the third highest rate of overdose deaths in the United States.

While this statistic is harrowing, there are many treatment options for Pennsylvania residents who are ready to get their lives back.

From inpatient treatment to sober-living options, Pennsylvania has many ways for people struggling with substance abuse to get the help they need.

How To Find & Choose Addiction Treatment In Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs is committed to helping Pennsylvania residents connect with the resources they need to get well.

People searching for drug and alcohol addiction treatment in the Pennsylvania can start by:

    • contacting a treatment provider directly
    • using Pennsylvania’s addiction help hotline: 1-800-662-4357
    • using SAMHSA’s behavioral health treatment locator

As you go through the process of learning more about treatment facilities, it can be tough to decide which one makes the most sense for your needs.

When comparing recovery centers, you may want to consider:

    • individualized treatment plans: your treatment plan needs to be based on your personal needs, not a one-size-fits-all approach
    • evidence based services: treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy have proven effective for substance use disorder
    • family involvement: if your family members and loved ones are a part of your support system, you may want them to be involved with your treatment and aftercare plans
    • co-occurring disorders: for people suffering from a mental health issue in addition to substance use disorder, it’s important to choose a treatment facility that has experience treating dual diagnosis patients
    • continuum of care: working with the same treatment providers throughout your treatment can improve outcomes and help you feel more comfortable with the recovery process

    Pennsylvania Substance Abuse Treatment Programs

Residents of Pennsylvania have many options for drug and alcohol rehab centers.

The level of care that makes the most sense for you will depend on several factors, including:

    • your insurance coverage
    • whether you’re able to take time away from work and family
    • mental health conditions you may deal with in addition to substance use disorder

After a substance abuse assessment, various levels of care are available to meet your needs, from detox support to aftercare planning.

    Medical Detoxification

For many with substance use disorder, going through a medically supervised drug and alcohol detoxification program is the first step toward recovery.

Going through the detox process on your own can be dangerous. When you go through a medical drug and alcohol detox program, you’ll be monitored by professionals who will be able to help you get through the withdrawal process as comfortably as possible.

    Residential/Inpatient Drug Rehab

Residential or inpatient drug rehab gives you the chance to fully focus on treatment for alcohol or drug addiction. Inpatient treatment allows you to remove yourself from the people, places, and things that tempt you to use.

While in residential treatment, you’ll work with healthcare providers who will help you develop strategies to stay clean when you return to normal life. Health services may include behavioral therapy, group therapy, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and more.

    Outpatient Treatment

Many people are unable to take the time away from work and family responsibilities to attend inpatient treatment. Luckily,  outpatient treatment can be just as effective as a residential rehab program.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) offer treatment services that are similar to inpatient rehab, but still allow you to return to the tasks of your daily life.

    Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a unique program that’s specifically meant for alcohol and opioid addiction.

MAT programs involve the use of an FDA-approved medication that’s combined with behavioral therapy and other recovery services. Medication works to lower alcohol or opioid dependency, while therapy helps to change your thinking and attitudes about drug use.

    Aftercare Support

When you finish rehab, your journey to a sober life is just beginning. Having an aftercare support plan in place is essential for long-term success.

Your treatment team will work with you to develop an aftercare plan, which may include:

    • sober-living housing
    • ongoing group therapy
    • support groups like AA or NA
    • additional relapse prevention services
