Cannabis & Sex | How Marijuana Affects Sex

Marijuana likely affects both sexual performance and sex drive. Participants in various studies have reported both increased and decreased feelings of pleasure from sexual intercourse after using marijuana. Sexual desire after marijuana use may also vary from person to person.

Data on the relationship between marijuana use and sexual experiences is sparse. The supposed sexual effects of marijuana over the years have primarily come from self-reported anecdotes. More scientific studies may be needed to determine how marijuana affects sexual encounters.

Using marijuana to enhance sexual pleasure may cause unpleasant side effects, such as paranoia, anxiety, and even erectile dysfunction.

    Marijuana Use & Sexual Experiences

People have self-reported the effects of marijuana as an aphrodisiac for years.

Studies on the link between marijuana and sexual function have varying results. Some respondents reported marijuana positively affecting their sexual health, some reported a mix of positive and negative effects, and others reported primarily negative effects.

The two main chemicals in marijuana are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

THC and CBD can bind to cannabinoid receptors in the body, which may affect your sex drive and performance. The endocannabinoid system extends to the penis, and THC binding to receptors there may also cause erectile dysfunction.

The use of cannabis can affect the following aspects of your sex life:

    • sexual performance
    • sexual pleasure
    • sexual frequency
    • sex drive
    • ability to orgasm
    • sexual dysfunction
    • sperm count and function

Limited Research On Marijuana & Sex

Both past and recent studies have focused primarily on the effects of cannabis in men. The effects of cannabis on sexual function in women may require more research.

Recent studies have linked the endocannabinoid system to increased sexual function. However, more research may be needed on the frequency of marijuana use and changes in sexual function. These connections are still largely unknown.

Currently, medical professionals may not recommend marijuana use as a cure for sexual dysfunction. Talk to your doctor if you are looking for solutions in this aspect of your life.

Risks Of Marijuana Use For Sex

Marijuana use can affect your judgment. Smoking weed, vaping, or taking edibles can lead to poor decision-making, unsafe sexual activity, and sexually-transmitted diseases.

The legalization of marijuana in many parts of the United States has led to increased recreational use. However, heavy marijuana use can cause far-reaching health problems beyond your sex life. Marijuana has been linked to heart problems, breathing problems, and decreased mental health.
