Many people buy weed by the gram. One gram of cannabis flower will typically fill one marijuana cigarette (also called a joint or blunt). It usually costs between $5 and $20. The average cost is $10, which is why a single gram of marijuana is often called a “dime bag.”
Average Cost Of Marijuana
Marijuana is a mix of dried flowers from the cannabis plant. It’s one of the most popular drugs in the world. As with other drugs, the average price of weed depends on certain factors, including the amount you buy.
Weed measurements and their average prices include:
An Eighth Of Weed
An eighth of weed is an eighth of an ounce of cannabis flower (or 3.5 grams). It usually costs between $30 and $70.
A Quarter Of Weed
A quarter of weed is a quarter of an ounce of cannabis flower (or 7 grams). It usually costs between $70 and $100.
A Half Ounce Of Weed
A half ounce of weed is two quarters of cannabis flower (or 14 grams). It usually costs between $100 and $190.
An Ounce Of Weed
An ounce of weed is two halves of cannabis flower (or 28 grams). It usually costs between $190 and $350.
In states that have legalized medical or recreational cannabis use, it is illegal to purchase more than one ounce of marijuana per day. However, larger quantities of marijuana may be sold illegally on the street, often for thousands of dollars.
What Factors Affect The Price Of Weed?
The amount of weed you buy is not the only factor that impacts price. Another important factor is location.
In general, weed costs less in states that have legalized recreational cannabis use, such as California and Colorado. However, cannabis from legal dispensaries tends to cost more than cannabis purchased on the street. That’s because legal cannabis is taxed.
In addition, high-quality weed is generally more expensive than low-quality weed.
Most cannabis consumers define “high-quality weed” (also called “top-shelf weed”) as weed with a high concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. In other words, it’s the ingredient that makes you feel high.
Risks Of Marijuana Use
No matter how much weed costs, it can cause health problems, including:
- nausea and vomiting
- breathing problems (from smoking marijuana)
- paranoia
- hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that aren’t there)
In addition, marijuana can hinder your memory, thinking, and learning, particularly if you start using it as a teenager. It can also worsen symptoms of the mental health condition schizophrenia.
Finally, marijuana can be addictive.
Marijuana Use Disorder
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), about 1 in 10 people who use marijuana become addicted to it. Marijuana addiction is a serious disease that makes you feel unable to stop using the drug. Common symptoms include:
- loss of motivation
- loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
- mood swings
- tolerance, which means you need increasingly larger or more frequent doses of marijuana to feel the desired effects
- physical dependence, which means your body starts relying on marijuana to function normally
If you are physically dependent on marijuana and stop using it, you may experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and intense cravings for marijuana.
Marijuana Addiction Treatment Options
If you or someone you love feels unable to stop using marijuana, seek help at a substance abuse treatment program. Available on an inpatient or outpatient basis, these programs offer treatments such as:
- cognitive behavioral therapy, in which you can learn how to cope with marijuana cravings and any mental health concerns that may have led you to abuse marijuana in the first place
- motivational enhancement therapy, in which you can increase your motivation to recover from marijuana addiction
- contingency management, in which you can receive rewards (such as cash or gift cards) for avoiding marijuana
- support groups, in which you can discuss your experiences with other people in recovery
