Profiles Of Addiction Recovery | Lady Gaga
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanott (known as Lady Gaga) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who has struggled with substance abuse and drug addiction in her past. Before the pop star shot to superstardom with her music, she participated in heavy drug use.
Lady Gaga’s History Of Substance Abuse
According to an interview with the Rolling Stone, Lady Gaga suffered from depression at the age of 19, dropping out of high school and finally turning to her drug of choice, cocaine.
In 2010, Gaga revealed to ABC News that although she did have struggles with drugs in the past, she only participates in drug use one or two times a year. While she stated she no longer used cocaine, she admitted to using MDMA/ecstasy.
Injury & Marijuana Use
Unfortunately, before completing her Born This Way tour in 2012, Gaga received a hip injury, requiring surgery. During this time, she turned to a form of self-medication due to the hip pain she experienced.
More specifically, Lady Gaga consumed more than 15-20 marijuana cigarettes per day to cope with her constant pain, stating she was addicted to marijuana.
Lady Gaga’s Recovery Efforts
Lady Gaga eventually stopped drug use and began singing about her struggles with her music. In addition, she specifically chose to star in A Star is Born due to the mental illness depicted in the film.
In fact, while promoting the film in 2018, she stated she stressed the importance of early intervention in those struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues.
In 2017, Gaga released a documentary on Netflix in which the celeb discussed her history of substance abuse and mental health struggles. In 2020, she contemplated no longer drinking alcohol while creating her album Chromatica.
Art As A Form Of Recovery
While Lady Gaga has not received treatment for alcohol or drug use, she has continued to remain sober, concentrating on her art as a form of recovery.
However, as she herself suggested during promotion of A Star is Born, finding treatment as soon as possible can be beneficial for those living with addiction.
