Lana Del Rey | Addiction Recovery

Singer-songwriter and model Lana Del Rey is well-known for her songs and her style, but what people might not know is that she suffered from alcohol addiction as a young teenager. Before her rise to fame, she embraced rehab and recovery and has been sober ever since.

Her inspiring story proves that even a young, successful singer who parties in Hollywood with drugs and alcohol can achieve lasting recovery.

Lana Del Rey’s History Of Substance Abuse & Recovery

Lana Del Rey has been candid about her substance abuse issues related to alcohol. She started drinking from an early age and quickly began drinking every day. She described herself as a “daily drinker” when she was a teenager.

At 15, her parents sent her to Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut to try and help with her drinking. Unfortunately, that didn’t work and Del Rey moved on to drugs as well. However, it’s unclear what drugs she used.

In many interviews, she talked about having a dark side and how exciting it was at first to drink and be wild. But she soon realized that letting that “dark side” win wasn’t what she wanted.

Most of the songs on her Born To Die album are about her years of drinking. Additionally, her song “Carmen” is about her being a teenager struggling with addiction.

    Recovery

In 2012, she stated to British GQ that she had been sober for nine years.

In 2013, she also opened up about how criticism of her work can make it difficult to stay on track and not drink again. That said, she has kept her sobriety even when she was getting some of her worst reviews when her album Ultraviolence came out in 2014.

Did Lana Del Rey Go To Rehab?

While the first attempt at help and rehab at the Kent School didn’t work, eventually, Del Rey attended another rehab program that did work. She ultimately began working at an outreach program for those struggling with drug and/or alcohol addiction.

As of 2023, she believes that she could not have enjoyed all the success she has experienced over the years if she had kept drinking or if she was still drinking today.

    About Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey was born Elizabeth Grant on June 21, 1985, in Manhattan, New York. Her career in music didn’t really begin until 2010 when she released her first album under her given name, Lizzie Grant.

Unfortunately, the record flopped but she decided to reinvent herself as the Lana Del Rey the world knows.

She came into the spotlight in 2011 with her song “Video Games” and the hype from that album made her 2012 debut Born To Die an instant hit.

As her career continued, she was awarded Variety’s Decade Award at the Variety Hitmakers Awards, two Brit Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, and a Satellite Award. She was also nominated for six Grammys and a Golden Globe Award.
