How To Determine Behavioral Health Systems Benefits For Substance Abuse Treatment

Employees may ask employers if they are part of the BHS network of providers. To determine your insurance coverage for substance use disorder treatment services, consider:

    • learning more about the BHS network
    • contacting your employer for information on your insurance plan
    • using the BHS Provider Guide that answers common questions asked by employees and employers

Employees interested in learning if a particular hospital or accredited treatment center is included in their employer’s BHS network can contact that treatment facility directly.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Detoxification Programs?

Before entering a substance abuse treatment program, individuals with an alcohol or drug addiction need to complete a medically supervised detox

This level of care allows patients to safely reduce chemical dependency while being monitored by physicians specializing in addiction treatment. Medications to control withdrawal symptoms and cravings may be provided during the detox process.

Many substance abuse treatment centers that are part of the BHS system offer medical detox programs. Contacting BHS or the treatment center is the quickest way to learn about detox coverage.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Inpatient Drug Or Alcohol Rehab?

As long as an inpatient treatment center is part of the BHS provider system, that rehab center should be covered. The BHS A.S.S.I.S.T Employee Assistance Plan provides assessment, referral, and counseling services for employees of companies included in the BHS system.

Residential treatment programs offer mental health treatment for co-occurring disorders, evidence-based behavioral health care, individual counseling, and other services based on the latest addiction medicine.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Outpatient Drug Or Alcohol Rehab?

Yes, BHS has many outpatient treatment centers included in its system. Outpatient services accommodate individuals who have family or work obligations they can’t forego during treatment.

In addition, outpatient treatment is usually recommended for people who do not have serious, underlying medical or mental health disorders that need addressed. A BHS EAP evaluation can determine if someone needs outpatient or inpatient treatment.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are often the next step in transitioning from an inpatient treatment program. An IOP may also be suitable for individuals who have mild substance abuse problems, don’t need to detox, and have support from family members.

The main difference between outpatient programs and IOPs is the number of hours a person spends attending therapy and counseling at the treatment center.

Talking to your employer or contacting a drug or alcohol recovery center is the best method for finding out if the center is included in the BHS system of providers.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Partial Hospitalization Programs?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a more intensive type of outpatient program for people with moderate to severe substance addictions who cannot attend inpatient treatment.

PHP is recommended for parents and caregivers who have obligations but need comprehensive services for alcohol or drug use. Patients in PHPs may be medically monitored throughout the day for withdrawal symptoms or underlying health issues.

Most drug and alcohol treatment centers offer PHPs. If a center is part of BHS, and it offers PHPs, the program will likely be covered.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Methadone Or Suboxone Treatment

Suboxone and methadone are medications given to people recovering from opioid/opiate addictions. Both medications help reduce withdrawal symptoms, suppress cravings, and block the effects of opioids if a person relapses.

BHS provides a prescription management program for its members that works in conjunction with psychiatrists and addiction physicians to ensure patients are receiving the appropriate medication for treating an opioid addiction.

Does Behavioral Health Systems Cover Medication-Assisted Treatment For Alcohol Addiction?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for alcohol addiction involves one or more FDA-approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings for alcohol, and provide anxiety relief during detox.

The most commonly used medications in MAT for alcohol abuse include benzodiazepines, naltrexone, Antabuse and acamprosate. Alcohol recovery centers that are part of BHS will likely cover MAT for alcoholism.
