Fake Heroin | Risks & Dangers Of Acetyl Fentanyl

As a white powder, acetyl fentanyl is a prime suspect for fake heroin and counterfeit prescription opioids.

This intense synthetic opioid analgesic binds to opioid receptors in the brain and changes how the body responds to pain, which makes it a direct substitute for heroin and other opioids.

Because it has no approved medical use in the United States, acetyl fentanyl is considered an illicit drug with a Schedule I controlled substance status by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

People living with heroin addiction may accidentally use acetyl fentanyl thinking the substance they’re injecting or snorting is heroin. This can lead to drug overdose death and is a significant factor in the national opioid crisis.

Risks & Dangers Of Acetyl Fentanyl

Drug dealers may sell acetyl fentanyl as heroin for several reasons, but those who have used fake heroin describe the effects as different and even stronger than regular heroin.

Due to the increase in effects, many users find it unpleasant and more risky, fearing a “bad batch” that could potentially lead to a life-threatening overdose.

    Overdose

Because of how potent acetyl fentanyl is, the risk of overdose is significant when people think they’re using heroin.

Acetyl fentanyl may look like heroin but it is about 50 times more intense and toxic. Because of how similar it is in appearance, people have even gone to the hospital with what they thought was a heroin overdose but it turned out to be fentanyl instead.

The symptoms of an acetyl fentanyl overdose are similar to the side effects of opioid overdose and can include:

    • lethargy
    • respiratory depression and slowed breathing
    • blue lips and clammy skin
    • hypoxia, or inadequate oxygen in the brain

If you or a loved one experiences any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. When you get to the hospital, healthcare providers will likely administer naloxone (Narcan), which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose almost immediately.

How To Detect Acetyl Fentanyl In Fake Heroin

To detect acetyl fentanyl in heroin or other street drugs, you can use fentanyl test strips.

Fentanyl test strips can detect fentanyl in heroin powder, as well as counterfeit pills. Test strips can ensure you avoid fake heroin use and reduce your risk of fatal overdose.
