  • Psilocybin mushrooms, also known as magic mushrooms or shrooms, can stay in your system for about 15 hours after the last dose. For people who struggle with chronic substance abuse of shrooms, it can stay in their system for several days.

The term “shrooms” can include any substance that contains psilocybin. Psilocybin is a naturally-occurring hallucinogen that can be extracted from many species of mushrooms. Shrooms may also include fungi with components similar to psilocybin, such as magic truffles.

Standard drug tests may not detect psychedelic mushrooms, and specialized tests may be needed to detect mushroom use. A positive test could indicate that the patient is in need of a substance abuse treatment program.

Drug Tests & Detection Times For Shrooms

General drug testing methods do not likely include shrooms. These types of drug tests may detect recent cannabis, opioids, amphetamines, and alcohol use, but shrooms may require specific, targeted tests to detect.

A mushroom test may be performed if a patient presents to a medical setting with side effects of illicit substance use involving shrooms. These effects may include hallucinations, psychosis, vomiting, weakness, panic attacks, and cardiac arrest.

Screenings for psychedelic mushroom use may test for psilocybin or its metabolite, psilocin.

    Urine Test

A urine test has a detection time for mushroom use of 24 hours to 3 days. Specially designed urine tests may be needed to detect shrooms through excretion.

An amount of psilocybin higher than 1.0 nanogram(ng)/L in a urine sample may cause a positive result.

    Saliva Test

Saliva tests may have a detection window of about 24 to 48 hours, similar to urine tests. These tests may also be designed to test for psychedelic mushrooms.

    Blood Test

Blood tests may detect psilocybin and psilocin for about 15 hours after the last dose. The detection window may increase if the person’s system has accumulated psilocybin due to repeated use.

    Hair Test

Shrooms and their metabolites can be detected in hair follicle tests for up to 90 days. Like other substances, psychedelic compounds can end up in hair samples through the bloodstream and remain there as hair grows out.

    Half-Life Of Psilocybin & Psilocin

Half-life is the amount of time it takes for a substance to decrease to half of its maximum concentration after ingestion. The half-life of a substance can be used to determine its elimination time.

After about five half-life cycles, most substances are virtually eliminated from the body.

Psilocybin and its main component, psilocin, have an average half-life of about 3 hours. Five half-life cycles of psilocybin is about 15 hours. The psychedelic effects of shrooms, such as hallucinations, relaxation, and paranoia in the case of a “bad trip,” can last for 6 hours.

Some studies have observed trace amounts of shrooms after several days of chronic drug use. Higher frequency of use can cause amounts of psilocybin to build up in a person’s system, which can lead to longer elimination times.

A positive drug test, along with a decline in physical or mental health, may suggest that professional treatment is a viable path to recovery for you.
