Simon Pegg is a Hollywood actor known for his various roles in film and television. Despite this, he has suffered from alcohol addiction and mental health issues such as depression.
Simon Pegg, Depression, & Alcohol Abuse
Pegg has a long history of substance abuse and has spoken openly about his struggle with mental illness and alcoholism throughout his career, specifically in detail to The Guardian in 2018. He stated he self-medicated with alcohol for depression since he was 18 years old.
In an interview with host Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2023, he revealed that he struggled with depression again as an adult in 2006 while on the film set of Mission Impossible III.
Speaking with Laverne, he stated “you become very sneaky” when you’re trying to hide a drug or alcohol problem.
Simon Pegg’s Recovery Efforts
Pegg credits the birth of his daughter in helping him seek recovery. He attended a rehab center in 2010, shortly before he participated in the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol film.
In addition, Pegg attends Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings to help maintain sobriety.

Simon Pegg was born on February 14, 1970, in England. With a love for film, Pegg became involved with a comedy troupe early in his career, graduating from the University of Bristol in 1991 with a degree in theatre, television, and film.
Pegg’s career continued as he later starred in Band of Brothers in 2001 and eventually the blockbuster hit film that he’s most known for, Shaun of the Dead in 2004.
Pegg married Maureen McCann in 2005. Their daughter Matilda was born in 2009.
Continued Stardom
His stardom continued in 2006 as he joined the Mission Impossible films as Benji Dunn, an IMF technical field agent in Mission Impossible III alongside co-star Tom Cruise. In 2007 he starred in Hot Fuzz, and in 2009, joined the cast of the J.J.Abrams rebooted Star Trek films.
In 2013, he played the character Gary King in The World’s End and later entered the world of Star Wars with the Disney sequel trilogy, appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens in 2015.
Pegg stars in another Mission Impossible film titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in 2023 and Part Two in 2024.
