- Recovery Is Possible
Samuel L. Jackson is a famous actor and filmmaker known across generations for his iconic characters such as Mace Windu in the Star Wars, Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, or Nick Fury from Marvel’s The Avengers.
Known to be one of the highest grossing actors of all time, Samuel L. Jackson is a household name with a long-history of success. Despite this, he has struggled with alcohol and cocaine addiction during his career.
Heavy Substance Use
During the 1970s and 1980s, Jackson participated in drug use, primarily alcohol, heroin, and LSD. By the 1990s, he had overdosed on heroin at various times.
After his experience with heroin, Jackson continued with heavy cocaine use. In 1991, Jackson attended a bachelor party where he brought home drug paraphernalia and cocaine.
He turned on the stove to cook the drug, but due his heavy drug and alcohol use, he passed out on the kitchen floor before he could cook the cocaine. This is the moment Jackson contributes to his realization that he desperately required treatment for his addiction.
Finding Recovery After Hitting Rock Bottom
After the bachelor party incident in 1991, Jackson entered a treatment center in New York with the support of his wife and family.
Jackson later spoke with People in 2022 regarding his drug addiction, stating, “I had basically moved into the basement of our brownstone,” and following that up by stating he felt he had “hit rock bottom.”
Strong Support System
Jackson continues to have support from his wife, Broadway actress Latanya Richardson Jackson and their daughter Zoe. In fact, he acknowledged the two important women in his life when he won the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, stating they are the reason for his recovery.
Thankfully, with a strong support system and through the attendance of a rehab program and a treatment center, Jackson received help for his drug use and has maintained sobriety since treatment.
About Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel L. Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington D.C., but later moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Growing up, he attended segregated schools, constantly moving from one to the next.
Jackson later graduated from Riverside High School in Chattanooga and attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. However, his time at the school came to a halt once the assassination of the civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. took place.
While in Atlanta, Jackson participated in stage plays and later landed film roles. He became known as the “king of cameos” due to his multiple appearances which were iconic, yet involved little screen time.
Jackson moved to New York City in the 1970s where he met his future wife Latanya Richardson. The pair would later marry in 1980.
Success & Accolades
In 1991, he received the Best Supporting Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
His career began gathering more traction when he was chosen by Spike Lee to portray a “crackhead” in the film Jungle Fever. In 1994, he got his “big break” while working with Quentin Tarantino on Pulp Fiction.
Jackson moved to Los Angeles and began to receive life-altering roles for his career including the role of Jedi Mace Windu in the Star Wars franchise. This catapulted his Hollywood career, with millions of all ages recognizing him for his portrayal of the character.
