Profiles Of Addiction Recovery | Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith is an American actress known for films such as Scream 2 and The Nutty Professor. Smith is also the recipient of a Daytime Emmy Award for her talk show Red Table Talk.

Jada Pinkett Smith is also known for her marriage to the household name actor Will Smith. Unfortunately, throughout her career, Jada Pinkett Smith has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.

    Heroin, Ecstasy, & Alcohol Use

Smith’s mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris struggled with a heroin addiction, as did Jada. Early in her life during school, Smith was a drug dealer.

During an episode of Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith opened up about her addiction issues, stating she is a “walking miracle” because she was partaking in heroin, ecstasy, and alcohol use at the same time.

    Passing Out On Set

In 1996, she passed out during filming of The Nutty Professor due to a bad batch of ecstasy. On her talk show, Smith stated she told the crew that she took “old medication from a vitamin bottle.”

Smith later admitted that she had to hit rock bottom and promised that would be the last time she would show up to set on drugs. After the incident, Smith stated she stopped drinking alcohol cold turkey when she noticed herself reaching for a third bottle of wine.

    Binge Drinking & Sex Addiction

Smith also stated drinking red wine was the equivalent of water to her at the time, revealing she was a weekend party girl in which she would try to keep her “high going longer.” Smith also referenced binge drinking, stating, “I am a binger, I become obsessed with things.”

Smith also spoke candidly on her talk show about her struggle with sex addiction, remarking that “ everything could be fixed by sex.”

    Jada Pinkett Smith’s Recovery Efforts

Smith admits she has the occasional glass of wine to this day. However, she has stopped drug and alcohol abuse.

Her eye-opening experience of reaching for the third bottle of wine began her journey to sobriety, as it was the last time she participated in binge drinking or heavy drug use.

    About Jada Pinkett Smith

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith’s “big break” came with her role opposite Eddie Murphy in a remake of The Nutty Professor. Later, she appeared in Scream 2 and Spike Lee’s Bamboozled.

In 1997, she married actor Will Smith. Together, they have their daughter Willow Smith and son Jaden Smith.

    Alopecia & The Oscars’ Fiasco

Smith continued to find success both as an actress and musician. Additionally, 2018 saw the presence of Smith’s social media Facebook Watch Series talk show in which she opens up about drug use and her recent diagnosis of the autoimmune disease alopecia.

At the 2021 Oscars, comedian Chris Rock joked about Jada’s autoimmune disorder, prompting her husband Will Smith to get out of his seat and slap Rock across the face, making Hollywood history. Will Smith later went on to receive the Best Actor Award for his role in Emancipation.
