Supermodel and Hollywood actress Cara Delevingne is well-known for appearing in countless fashion campaigns and runway shows as well as a few star-studded movies and shows.
But what she may not be as well known for is addiction. Delevingne recently revealed that she’s been struggling with drug and alcohol abuse for most of her life. As of March 2023, she’s finally receiving addiction treatment and has been sober for four months.
Family History Of Addiction
Delevingne’s mother struggled with heroin addiction for most of Delevingne’s life as well as bipolar disorder. Addiction and mental health disorders clearly run in the family.
In fact, from a young age, Delevingen has struggled with dyspraxia (a neurological disorder), depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug addiction, and self-harm.
Early Drug & Alcohol Use
She remembers her first time abusing alcohol when she was seven years old. She was at a wedding and drank multiple glasses of champagne all at one time. By 10, she was abusing sleeping pills to deal with insomnia.
Things Got Worse In 2020
Delevingne went on to abuse alcohol on and off in her teens and twenties. She recently recalled going to the Met Gala in May 2022 and then getting blackout drunk after. The next day, she had to travel to her grandmother’s funeral with a massive hangover.
While she continued to abuse substances in 2022, 2020 is really when things came to a head.
Various things happened at once. The pandemic lockdown went into effect, Delevingne broke up with her girlfriend of two years, Ashley Benson, and was without work. She went into isolation and took to partying instead of getting help.
She continued partying through 2022 and into her 29th birthday in August 2022. She went on to use drugs at the Burning Man festival that she says “put [her] in danger.”
Reality Check & Wake-Up Call
It was the release of photos of Delevingne and her erratic behavior at the Van Nuys airport in Los Angeles, California, after her time at Burning Man in 2022, that really put things into perspective. She’s described it as a “reality check” and a “wake up call.”
After the pictures began trending online, her friends came together and discussed their worries with her. She was also seen behaving erratically at the Billboard Music Awards in May 2022.
Rehab & Recovery
After the airport paparazzi photos were released, Cara Delevingne checked herself into rehab.
The 30-year-old committed herself to a 12-step program that includes support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. She has remained sober since that time, according to the April issue of Vogue magazine.
About Her Recovery Efforts
She’s said that “the community made a huge difference. The opposite of addiction is connection, and I really found that in 12-step.”
After rehab, Delevingne spent Christmas and New Year’s sober with her new girlfriend Leah Mason. On top of the 12-step program, she’s also incorporated meditation into her twice-daily yoga practice and is going to regular therapy.
Of the recovery process, Delevingne has recently said, “This process obviously has its ups and downs, but I’ve started realizing so much…It doesn’t happen overnight.”
