Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs that can treat sleep disorders like insomnia, seizure disorders like epilepsy, and anxiety disorders like panic disorder.

As central nervous system depressants, they promote sedation. They can also cause side effects like drowsiness, confusion, and memory problems.

Popular benzodiazepines include alprazolam (brand name Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), and temazepam (Restoril).

According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), benzodiazepines pose a high risk of drug abuse and addiction. That’s because they can cause euphoria or intense joy.

Because these prescription drugs are frequently abused, many people sell them on the street under various names.

    Benzodiazepine Street Names

To prevent detection by law enforcement, people who illegally buy and sell benzodiazepines refer to the drugs using slang terms, also called street names. Common street names for benzodiazepines include:

    • benzos
    • candy
    • chill pills
    • downers
    • nerve pills
    • sleeping pills
    • tranks

In addition, some of the more popular benzodiazepines have specific street names:

    Alprazolam (Xanax)

Common street names for alprazolam include:

    • Bars
    • Bicycle Handlebars
    • Bicycle Parts

    Benzodiazepine Street Prices

On the street, benzodiazepines usually cost about $1 to $20 per pill. The exact price depends on the dosage and the type of benzodiazepine, particularly how rare it is in your area. The rarer it is, the more expensive it is.

    Common benzodiazepine street prices include:

    • Xanax 1mg = $2 to $3
    • Xanax 2mg = $4 to $5
    • Klonopin 1mg = $2 to $3
    • Klonopin 2mg = $5 to $10
    • Valium 1mg = $1
    • Valium 5mg = $5
    • Valium 10mg = $10
    • Ativan 1mg = $1
    • Ativan 2mg = $4

Benzodiazepine Street Prices Vs. Prescription Prices

In general, benzodiazepine street prices are much higher than prescription prices. For example, while 1 milligram of Xanax costs $2 to $3 on the street, a prescription for 60 1mg tablets of alprazolam (the generic form of Xanax) can cost as little as $10.

    Dangers Of Abusing Benzodiazepines

When you abuse benzodiazepines (use them in a manner not prescribed by a doctor), you face a high risk of addiction.

Also called substance use disorder, addiction is a serious disease that makes it extremely difficult to stop using a drug. In most cases, it requires professional treatment.

    Overdose

When you abuse or are addicted to a benzodiazepine, you could experience a life-threatening overdose. Overdose is more likely if you mix the benzodiazepine with another substance, such as alcohol or opioids.

Opioids are powerful painkillers that include fentanyl, codeine, oxycodone (also called OxyContin or “Oxy”), hydrocodone (“hydro”),Vicodin (“vikes”), and Percocet (“percs”).
