  • What Does Whiskey Taste Like?

    What Does Whiskey Taste Like?

Different types of alcohol have different flavors. The taste depends on what they’re made of and how they’re made.

Whiskey is no different. It has its own distinct flavor. When looking at various types of whiskey, the flavors can be dramatically different.

Taste Of Whiskey Based On Grain

The flavor of whiskey relies heavily on what grain is used in it. Some of the grains include:

    • barley: sweet caramel flavor with notes of toffee, brown sugar, nutty, or smoky flavors (unmalted barley can taste light, sour, and fruity)
    • corn: syrupy, cotton candy, vanilla, and maple syrup flavors
    • rye: spicy with cinnamon flavors
    • wheat: wheat bread and honey

Taste Of Whiskey Based On The Barrel

A good portion of a whiskey’s flavor comes from the barrel during the aging process. The type of wood, and whether it’s charred or toasted or if the barrel is new or used, can give whiskey different tastes.

    Wood

American oak barrels give whiskey soft, vanilla, and caramel flavors. This is especially the case when the barrel is toasted or charred. European oak barrels give whiskey drinkers a more spicy and bitter flavor.

    New/Used Barrel

If the barrel has been previously used to store other spirits, the wood will absorb some of that flavor and transfer it into the whiskey. American whiskeys are generally aged in new barrels while Scottish whiskey, or scotch, is aged in barrels that were filled with bourbon beforehand.

    The Taste Of Whiskey

The taste of whiskey can differ depending on the type of whiskey, what it’s made of, the fermentation and distillation process, the type of barrel it’s aged in, and how you drink whiskey.

Some of the flavor descriptors used to describe the flavor profiles of different types of whiskey include:

    • full-bodied (several dominant flavors)
    • light-bodied (one or two dominant flavors and a clean, fresh taste)
    • delicate or light
    • bold
    • smooth
    • sweet
    • spicy
    • fruity
    • smoky/peaty flavor: peat was used in the malting process and smoke transferred to the grain

Mixing whiskey with water also dilutes the alcohol content (or ABV) and allows you to taste the more subtle flavors of each variety.

    Scotch

Scotch whiskey has a malty flavor because the malted barley is the most common ingredient. It’s why scotch whiskey is referred to as a single malt scotch.

It can also have a smokey flavor if the distillery used peat when heating the barley. If it’s aged in an oak barrel or cask, it can also take on fruity or vanilla notes.

Some of the types of scotch that differ in flavor include lowlands, highlands, Speyside, and Islay. They’re all from different regions of Scotland.

    Bourbon

Bourbon whiskey that’s made with lots of wheat tends to have a more mellow flavor. Whiskeys with more rye will likely be spicier.

Bourbon made with corn is going to be much sweeter than other bourbons and may include notes of honey, vanilla, caramel, and oak. It’ll also be smokey if aged in a charred oak barrel.

    Irish Whiskey

Irish whiskey tends to be smoother than Scotch because it goes through the distilling process three times and is made without using peat.

Some Irish whiskey can even be light and fruity with vanilla, grass, and wood notes. Some people even taste orange, cream, and lime.

    Rye Whiskey

Rye whiskey is similar to bourbon, but it’s not as sweet. It tends to be spicy with notes of oak, caramel, vanilla, and charcoal.

    Wheat Whiskey

Wheat whiskey is lighter on the palate and less sweet than bourbon. It has notes of bread, honey, cedar, cherries, and oak.
